Would you like to volunteer with us?
There are two different options if you want to be a volunteer: become an advisor or intern. Please note that our work involves providing legal advice and political advocacy; we do not provide social support or practical assistance – you will need to look elsewhere for that.
Advisor:
We are usually 6-8 volunteer advisors and one part-time coordinator, and we regularly need new volunteers. There is a significant need among asylum seekers and refugees for clear guidance and support in understanding the rules and navigating the system. But it is a demanding task; it is a very complicated area, and it is essential that our advice is 100% reliable and accurate. In some cases, we act as lawyers for our clients. You need to have some prior knowledge of refugees and relevant legislation, and you must be prepared to learn a lot in the beginning. Most of our advisors have studied law, Global Refugee Studies or the social worker education.
You must be prepared to be patient and open towards clients, but also assertive when necessary. You must read and speak Danish at a high level, and it is an advantage if you also speak other languages.
We have put together 8 manuals on Danish asylum and immigration law and practice, and at the start, you will only be observing from the sidelines. We are keen to ensure that volunteers are serious, are willing to make a steady time commitment and will stay with us for several years. You must also be willing to take on responsibility for individual cases yourself.
You will be rewarded for your efforts by being part of a small team of dedicated and talented people who are passionate about justice and respect for others. You will get the chance to meet people from all over the world who find themselves in exceptionally difficult circumstances. Importantly, you will also attain a thorough knowledge of legislation and legal practice that will allow you to make a real difference in people’s lives.
Interns:
From time to time, we need extra assistance with administrative and communications work. We therefore occasionally take on unpaid interns, for a minimum period of 4 months. They can be organised via the job centre or a particular study programme. Just as for advisors, it will usually be necessary to speak Danish and have some kind of relevant knowledge in order to be of help. Interns gain masses of experience and knowledge about refugees and general NGO work.
