Flight tickets

Refugees Welcome is able to purchase flight tickets on behalf of recognised refugees residing in Denmark who have been granted family reunification but are unable to cover the cost of bringing their spouse and children to Denmark themselves, because they receive the lowest level of benefits from their local authority. The Danish state covered these expenses until 2016.

From 2016 to 2024, we provided a subsidy for children's flight tickets and have helped several hundred families in this way – many of whom had been separated for years, which you can read about in some of our Case Stories. In 2025, we were able to begin offering to pay the entire ticket price, also for adult family members. This was made possible by a bequest from Hans Ole Larsen, who passed away in 2024 and left his entire estate to us. A beautiful gesture that has a hugely positive impact on many refugee families!

Who is eligible for a paid flight ticket?
Family members who have already been granted family reunification with a refugee in Denmark and have not yet entered the country are eligible. It is a requirement that the refugee residing here is not in work.

How do you apply?
Send us an email (kontakt@refugeeswelcome.dk) with the following attachments:

  • Latest payment receipt from Udbetaling Danmark or your local authority.

  • Permission for family reunification from the Danish Immigration Service for all family members.

  • Valid travel documents for everyone who is to travel.

  • Contact details for the refugee living in Denmark (telephone and email).

When the family arrives, we are very happy to receive a photo from the airport :-)
